Internal Comms: Benefits of using Workplace by Facebook

Internal comms is so important, more than ever right now and if there is one tool we couldn’t live without, that would be Workplace by Facebook. Not only is it super beneficial to our communication, productivity and culture, it’s also free!

Why Workplace?

Workplace is an internal collaboration tool for businesses of all sizes to use with their team. It has a paid option, however the free version has more than enough features.

This platform is completely seperate from personal Facebook pages, but has a similar interface which makes it really user friendly from the start. The concept is the same - you have a profile, newsfeed, groups, chat and can comment, like & share posts.

You can create groups for each of your departments or areas of the business and invite the relevant team members to join (not everyone needs to be in each group). The newsfeed view allows you to view all posts from the groups you are a part of or you can view the posts in a certain group only.

You can also create group chats or chat individually amongst your team including audio or video calls - keeping your inbox clear of internal emails (make sure you turn off email notifications!).

Download it as an app on your phone, utilise on your desktop or download the chat app to your computer to never miss a message.

Here’s how we use it:

We have a general group set up for day-to-day comms then a group for each department, as well as other areas such as Wellness and Culture.

Team members can share their plans for the day, wins, project updates, articles & tips of interest, learnings and also any personal updates they want to share. This keeps us all updated and connected throughout the day.

We use the calendar feature for our team events and utilise chats with each other daily.

You do need a company email address to use this platform and there are also similar options out there including Microsoft Teams and Slack.com; it’s about finding the right platform that is going to work for you.
